WFMW- Word World

Have you seen this kids show on PBS Kids yet?
My husband happened upon it a couple of weeks ago and the boys were transfixed. I know I know, TV is not exactly something we want our children transfixed on, but this one is so perfect for Owen’s age. Between the rhyming, word association, and recognition I love them watching it. Owen has already picked up so much from it.

According to their website their educational philosophy is the following:

Through its innovative approach of immersing viewers in a word-rich place, where things spell out the objects they represent, WordWorld aims to fascinate children with words and to inspire a love of words and reading. Featuring lovable, silly characters called WordFriends™ who embark on adventures in a world of words, WordWorld encourages preschoolers to see words as their friends, too. Providing constant opportunity for word play, WordWorld empowers children as early readers by making the important connections between letters, sounds, words and meaning that are necessary for reading.

If you have not checked it out yet I highly recommend you doing so!

We’ve seen it a few times. The time slot is right ;) , even if it is way over Hayden’s head.

Then again, I watched Square One when I was too young to “get it,” too.

This is my son’s new favorite show! In fact, he was really upset yesterday, because we had to take my daughter to the orthodontist during the time it was on. I recorded the show for him, but that’s a concept that’s over his head.

When we got home from the orthodontist, he burst into tears because he missed Word World. He was thrilled to discover he could watch the recording! :)

check out superwhy too!!! kat has been “reading” books to me - said she learned to read from superwhy! - not that i want her to learn from the tv…but why not engage in something educational? :)

My 3 and 4 year old both love this! They also like Super Why - my 3 year old has been known to beg to watch Super Why. In fact, Super Why is over, and I must turn off the TV. Mommy time is over! :-)

I believe that children learn from everything and this includes tv. Most of the time the tv in our home is tuned to PBS or the extended PBS. We record the shows and use them when we are learning about specific things. It’s called reinforced learning. They see, hear, do and say what they are learning. Just like everything else they will ever learn it has to be practiced. It’s not just a thought that holds.

How did you learn math? By seeing, hearing, saying and then doing.
It applies to everything from doing dishes, baking a pie to driving a car.
Make sure that if your using for example Word World and it’s about adding S to the end of words that it applies to what you are teaching. That is going to get you the most mileage out of what they are watching and learning. Remember we learn best when we see, listen, say and do.

    PBS Shows we currently watch/use-
    Word World
    Super Why
    Backyard Jungle
    Eek World
    Postcards From Buster
    Kratts’ Creatures
    It’s a Big, Big World
    Curious George
    Clifford the Big Red Dog
    Caillou
    Zoom
    Reading Rainbow
    Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

    Discovery
    Bindi the Jungle girl
    Time Warp Trio

I’ve also been know to use Food Networks. Their specials teach geography, history and food.

My ten month old has loved this show since he was eight months. If you stand in front of him, he moves to the side to continue watching the program and starts dancing as soon as the song starts. Great educational program.
