MomDot Party Day 2- Traditions

My favorite family tradition would have to be Christmas Eve growing up in my family.  My dad’s familly had 5 siblings and as soon as they all started pro-creating I think they must have realized Christmas Eve would be easier to celebrate than Christmas.  That way each of the individual families could celebrate Christmas day with their own families.

There are an absolute ton of us grandkids and when we were all little the house hosting Christmas Eve would be a zoo!  I remember random dance parties and tons of inside jokes were birthed there.  I wish so much that I could capture all this fun in a picture… but none really captures the scene on the whole.

Everyone would bring food.  At all our events there was always a feast of food!  And it was always so loud.  So loud we called ourselves “the loud family”.  Our heritage on that side of the family is GREEK, so my husband likes to compare it all to My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

That was my favorite tradition.  As far as creating a new one?  Hm.  I think for now carving pumpkins and roasting the seeds in the Fall.  It’s the only “holiday” that we are predictably in one place.  BUT I now will be thinking about other important traditions we can start around Christmas!

My dad has 5 brothers, so I remember those cousin filled holidays as a child as well. For Christmas it was a gift exchange for which we drew names. It was hilarious. Us cousins would all be fighting cause of our age differences and the adults would all be talking and not really caring to hear us whine about little stuff.

Sounds like so much fun spent with your family! It’s nice that you celebrate with everyone the day before and don’t have to run too much Christmas day.

I like that you celebrate with extended family on Christmas Eve so you can have your own family celebration on Christmas. Your Big Fat Greek celebration must be a hoot.

Your Christmas Eve tradition sounds similar to mine growing up. Lots and lots of family, food and fun!

Big families are always so much fun at Christmas time. I miss being able to get together with my siblings. I am glad we have a couple of cousins, aunts and a great grandma close by, though. :)

I wish we could get our families to do stuff on Christmas Eve so we could enjoy Christmas with just us

Your Christmas traditions growing up sound a lot like mine, there were 6 kids and 9 of us cousins and I have so many great memories from that!

Family and cousins are the best. I always loved getting together with my cousins, and my one cousin and I would always try to wear the same thing so we’d match! BTW- In Firefox, your layout is a little off. Like the one sidebar is above your posts. Just thought you might like to know!

My dad’s family is big too and there were always plenty of cousins around. Grandma had an old piano and we all loved to play that thing (by “play” I mean bang on the keys as loud as possible). The adults LOVED that.

Your Christmas Eve reminds me of mine growing up. My mom is one of eight siblings and my dad is one of five siblings. I’ve got cousins all over the place.

That sounds a lot like Thanksgiving at my brother’s house. He has three kids, we have two and one on the way, and his wife’s brother has three. Add in grandparents, aunts and uncles, and it’s a madhouse… but we LOVE IT!

I had so many relatives to visit over Christmas, Both of my parents and my stepmom had four brothers and sisters. So, family 1, 5 crazy family in one house, family 2 5 crazy families in one house, and family 3, all in 1 day and a half

I’m not a crowd person at all but for some reason I can tolerate family crowds. Maybe it’s the food that goes along!

My mother had 5 siblings too and our family did the exact same thing as yours. We now celebrate on Christmas Eve too!

That’s a good idea to celebrate on Christmas Eve with a huge family. My husband’s family do that(sorta, they switch off Christmas Eve and Christmas)

  28. Alisha on Fri, 14th Nov 2008 1:22 am

We always do a big thing on Christmas Eve. This is actually the first year that we will go home to our own home and do Christmas morning. We usually spend the night, but now we live in the same town so it looks like this is a new year for traditions on Christmas Morning.

  29. Jacquie on Fri, 14th Nov 2008 10:43 am

What a nice way to celebrate all together and have your own family time on the actual day of. I bet you all have lots of fun!:)
