Bringing Up Boys & Dealing With Their Pee.

Beware, what you are about to read is not intended for the light of stomach. I have avoided posting on this due to its grotesque nature, but alas, need help… so please if you have had children, especially if they are a little older than mine and preferably boys, READ ON!
My 1/2 bathroom in our main living area smells like a urinal! Not that I have smelled a ton of urinals in my 31 years… but my husband said so. I believe him because it smells like I would imagine a urinal smells.
Owen, newly potty-trained, actually uses the bathroom quite well. He has very recently decided to “stand up” to pee. That decision came with relief on my part because I hate sitting him on public commodes.
He rarely misses that I notice, but it still smells horrible. I don’t understand? I mop the floors, I clean the toilet… I have even wiped the wall down. I can not get rid of the smell. and if I do it returns in a day or so.
I have already learned that the boys have smelly smelly feet. Is this part of having boys too? Am I doomed to smelly bathroom? Should I just ban them from the bathroom most often used by our guests? Is there some solution no one talks about in public?
I have to know these things. I have never ever heard anyone talk about it. But nobody told me about the realities of labor either. I am thinking I have missed something.
Mother’s of older boys, please share your wisdom.
Thanks,

wow, I was really hoping someone would reply with an answer to you post! I’ve got the same problem and mine are 11 and 8!

Hi crystal
Welcome!
I did just post it, so it may be a little bit. You can click the box below and it will email you when there is a new comment… but I’m thinking since yours are 11 and 8 that this may just be part of having boys- in which case I think I need to ban them from the main bathroom right now
thanks for the input!

no help….I grew up with 4 brothers, and our main bathroom smelled like a urinal….I also have boys (ages 35 and 5) and our main bathroom smells like a urinal. It IS aiming problems…..their is always urine around my toilet no matter how many times (a day) I wipe it down with clorox wipes. I don’t think there really is a solution besides making them sit to pee.
Karen on Fri, 24th Aug 2007 8:17 am
Think about trying some spray designed to get rid of cat pee smells. We have stuff called Urine Off that works pretty well (unless said cat pees deep within a leather couch….grrr)
But it has some special chemical that de-activates the part of the urine that causes the smell instead of just covering up the smell.
Worth a shot, anyway.

This post made me realize I am not the only one who deals with such smells! The boys bathroom is our hall bath, too, and it often stinks. Since I have 4 boys (including a hubby and one still to be trained) here are some of the things I have done to help with the smell in their bathroom:
* I use some type of toilet cleaner…the kind that hangs in the toilet tank (not the bowl) and has bleach in it.
* I use Clorox Bleach Toilet Cleaner. I put it the bowl every couple days and let it sit for a little bit. I scrub only once a week but this help from having build up of smell.
*I also use an air freshner. I have two favorites and it really will depend on the size of the room. The two I like are Oust Small Space (great for a small size room) or Bath and Body Works Scentports. They are fabulous for larger spaces.
I hope this will help you out!

Can dudes reply?
I worked in housekeeping in college for a time. Needless to say the Men’s dorm bathroom that I was responsible for required a thorough cleaning every day. This included applying commercial grade cleaners and scrubbing as well as mopping the floor with a commercial grade cleaner.
But we both know you really don’t have time for that. I would highly recommend bleach tabs to drop in the tank and/or blue cleaning tabs to limit odors in the toilet. Oust air freshener works well for odors simply present in the air. As for the floor, if you have tile, the smell might be in the grout. I don’t know if a good grout cleaning might help or if it’s even possible.
Another thing, depending on how old the home might be, the wax seal ring (upon which the toilet sits and connects to the sewer piping) may be leaking odors from under the toilet. New wax seal rings are easy to acquire at Lowes or Home Depot. Could be a Saturday morning project or just call a plumber if you don’t want to mess with it.
Wish you the best.

I don’t have a potty trained boy as of yet, but boy, I can’t wait!! LOL. My husband is really clean so I’ve never noticed that smell in our bathroom but now that my inlaws have moved in, my bro in law has aiming problems too. I would think Bleach would be the best. UGH!
Good luck!

The joy of boys..while I only have 1 (2 including the hubby), I can’t stand the smell of pee. I do many of the same things as Jenn and I change the rugs often as well as making sure that I completely wipe the base of the toilet and all around it. One drop is all it takes.
Like the new look.

Ah, boys! It’s definitely the spraying problem, because no matter how careful they are, spray is spray! Unfortunately for Moms, it’s a matter of wiping down the whole toilet (every nook and cranny, especially near the hinges and screws) constantly and consistently. Even the covered bolt things that hold the toilet in place! And of course any rugs or bathroom accessories that MAY be in way of spray! We also have to be careful, though, in small bathrooms in particular… not to over deodorize with harmful chemicals. Even a bottle of baking soda and water kept handy will do the trick! Good luck and keep us posted! By the way, I have 2 grown sons and 5 grandsons ages 4 and under!!

oh ladies, ladies, ladies… dont you know that God blessed us with the ability to pee standing up for a plethora of reasons. most of which are even unknown to us, but it is so convenient. i am glad that you all dont work with me, because at my job, many of the “boys” actually take their work to the urinal or camode with them. yes, they do thier work on the side of the walls and for the most part, dont wash their hands after the mess. it makes me vomit, and trust me, i encourage anyone and everyone to not lick their fingers when trying to sepearte pages…
but in all seriousness, this is really bad behavior and that is why it is crucial that the mothers instruct us well before we venture off and get married.
my wife has applied the left foot of fellowship to me many times on my “rude, crude, gross and dsigusting behavior” and slowly my ways are changing. i think there is a DNA codon somewhere that guys share that we cant help. word in the scientific community is that it is a mutation of the c23-alpha-1b sequence.

I have two boys and a hubby. I also have a half bath downstairs that occasionally smells. I let the boys clean up their own mess. I didn’t make it and I’m not cleaning it up. Mine are 12 and 10, but even two year olds can clean up after themselves. They may not do it perfectly, but housework done incorrectly still blesses your family. Pinks and Blues had it right, the hinges and the screws under the hinges are where the smell builds up. Another cleaner that is helpful and less harmful is white vinegar. You can keep it in a spray bottle and use it to clean the bathroom. The initial smell from the vinegar will fade away and the bath will smell fresher than using bleach. Vinegar has antibacterial qualities too.
Hope this helps.
Mommy Zabs on Fri, 24th Aug 2007 8:50 pm
Math- So funny you mention vinegar. I actually clean with that in a spray bottle too and had written pinks and blues back asking if she ever used that
It must be that I’m not getting the hinges well enough or something… and I have wood so I wonder if that could possibly hold it in better???
I find vinegar is great for mopping my kitchen by the way. Nothing cuts through the nastiness on my floor quite as well!
thanks for you input.

oh, i totally know what you mean!
i LOVE “Method” cleaning products (available at Target). they are environmentally friendly, smell great and are effective. i keep a bottle of it in the bathroom so that when my son is finished peeing, it’s handy and easy to do a quick spray and wipe on and around the toilet.

Hi mz
How funny is this? Don’t be to upset with little Owen. The little guy has a peeing critter that has an eye that can’t see and a head that can’t think and it comes down to the fact that sometimes it just gets away from him.
The bad news is that the smell never gets any better and he will always miss. All you can do is keep cleaning and invest in a little Febreze.
Great post! The simple problems are always the best.

I have had the same problem. I believe one area that the smell seems to ‘hang out’ is on the hinges that attach the toilette seat to the rim of the toilette. I have taken this mechanism apart and soaked it in bleach. I also wipe the walls, floor and entire toilette with a disinfecting product and spray with Lysol. This seems to help for a short while….until the next little boy misses.

Okay, this might sound nuts but here it goes…
Have you considered that your son could be sleepwalking or going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, half asleep? I have four boys, ages almost-4 to almost-9. We would clean their bathroom religiously, almost daily. But the pee smell would be overwhelming. Finally, we realized one of them had been peeing in the trashcan. We lectured them on how that was a terrible thing to do, knock it off pronto.
But it kept happening. I was about to lose my mind when one night I heard a noise in the bathroom. It was one of my boys, peeing standing up, and he didn’t realize where he was or what he was doing. His body knew he had to pee. His mind was probably still back dreaming about Thomas the Tank Engine or something.
I thought I’d put this theory out there, just in case. It eventually stopped. My boys still produce odors like madmen, but the bathroom is halfway decent.

Boy, look at all the discussion this topic has raised.
I have three brothers and three sons so I’ve seen it all (well, not “all”).
One other tip is to get the boys involved in the bathroom cleaning. I would assign each boy a day of the week and let them do some of the cleaning. They might find themselves a bit more concerned with their bathroom habits if they know they are also responsible for cleaning.

I have 3 boys if you count my husband, and here is what I know about this subject:
1. When my bathroom still stinks after I have cleaned it, it is usually because the caulking that seals the toilet to the floor is getting old and you-know-what has gotten in there. Cut the old caulking out, and reseal that sucker.
2. I keep Costco wipes next to each toilet and I wipe the whole thing down frequently.
3. I either unscrew the lid/seat and clean all the little grooves and screws every once in a while, or I just replace the whole thing. It only costs about $10 for a new seat, it’s so easy even I can do it, and I love knowing that all the little screws and parts are free of pee.
4. I leave an air freshener behind the toilet.
Hope this helps!

There’s only one guy in my household, hubby, and it still smells bad. My hubby doesn’t miss, it’s just the splashback because of the height. I was shocked to see all the pee streaks on the out-sides of the toilet. I’m having hubby use wipes to clean up after he goes. I will have to check the hinges like others have suggested. And I will definitely try vinegar.
Blessings!

I have three potty trained boys - and for a while we had one toilet for 8 people.
Vinegar really does work on the smell. I’d also take any rugs or textiles away from the toilet area. The only way I’ve found to keep the smell down is to faithfully wipe the toilet down every single day.
I don’t get fancy - just spray the seat and porcelain base, wipe with toilet paper, and flush.
Two things to look out for: Older toilets, sometimes the hinges on the seat get a little loose. If the boy pees it could drip through the loose areas onto the base - so wipe the whole base down, even the sides.
And, if someone throws a wet diaper or pullup away in the bathroom, the room will stink in no time.
I usually spray and wipe once a day, midmorning; I try to wipe the rim whenever I go to the bathroom through the day, and I’ll do a quick check at night. Nothing makes a bathroom stinkier than a boy who forgets to flush at bedtime and doesn’t discover it until breakfast!

I have 3 boys and I have no rugs or toilet covers. I use vinegar with rubbing alcohol and douse the toilet and floor. My bathroom is sweet smelling. I have also used Mean Green from Dollar General.
Michele on Wed, 3rd Oct 2007 10:40 am
Ok, I know a lot of people talk about non-toxic cleaners, and I like them. BUT for this job the only thing that I have found that kills the smell is bleach. Even the bleach cleaner wasn’t strong enough. I bought a spray bottle and mixed 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water. Then I spray all around the sides and base of the toilet. Be sure to get in all the little crevices around the bowl. (Our problem came with night time peeing when my son would miss just enough that there was a little bit that ran down the side) Let it sit for a minute while you use regualar toilet bowl cleaner on the inside of the bowl. Then wipe it down spraying more as needed. Then I drop a clorox toilet tab in the tank to help until I get there next time.
Hope this helps!

I have two boys, 5 and 7, and a husband. Luckily my husband doesn’t make a mess, but the boys used to, that is until I started making them clean the floor and the toilet every time they peed somewhere besides inside the toilet bowl. My seven-year-old was the worst. He used to pee on the floor at my mom’s house and she started making him clean it up, too. Every morning I wipe the toilet down with anti-bacterial wipes, and I mean the whole toilet: the seat top and bottom, the lid, the front and sides, the area behind where the hinges are, the handle. With wiping the toilet down every day, and the floor around the toilet, and having the boys clean up after themselves if they miss, we don’t have any odors anymore. Good luck. I hate the smell of pee.
Shalee on Wed, 3rd Oct 2007 10:53 am
Oh! I had the same problem!
I started by making the boy clean the bathroom daily (Clorox wipes) so that he understands the importance of AIM. Then after he leaves, I spray the area with a pet odor spray since it is formulated with enzymes that deal with urine. We have a urinal no more AND my son does a much better job with his aim.
SAHMmy Says on Wed, 3rd Oct 2007 11:09 am
I don’t know what kind of floor you have. I have tile, and the pee smell had soaked into the grout! Nasty. I scrubbed with every imaginable and caustic cleanser, including straight bleach and straight vinegar–nothing worked. My bathroom really smelled like a urinal–pee and cleanser–yum! Finally, I scrubbed with a mixture of original scent Dawn dishwashing liquid and Borax (find it with the laundry detergent.) I wet a washcloth, poured on a few drops of Dawn, and sprinkled with the Borax. I scrubbed the grout, including the caulk around the toilet, and worked my way out of the bathroom, leaving it to dry. I expected that the granules from the Borax would need to be rinsed later, but to my surprise they just soaked in, and I now have an UNSCENTED bathroom! Yippee! Good luck
Megan on Wed, 3rd Oct 2007 11:11 am
Wow, I have gotten some excellent suggestions! Here are mine:
1) at least once a week, pour some peroxide into the toilet tank
2) make sure to wipe down the wall and floor behind the toilet, including the water fill pipes
3) wipe the toilet daily with clorox wipes, make sure to get UNDER the tank it self. ( I hope this makes sense) The underside of the tank is not gazed, so urine will sink in and continue to give off odors even when everything else is clean.
And I second the changing of the wax ring that made a big difference once my husband did that. HTH!

Yes, it’s a boy thing. I’ve got 3 boys. One word (okay, a few words): FEBREZE and FEBREZE AIR EFFECTS!
We have to wash our rugs at least once a week. And believe me when I tell you…it isn’t just the baby boys who ‘miss’!
Suzanne on Wed, 3rd Oct 2007 4:31 pm
Train them to sit to pee in private homes, as it is cleaner that way. I draped paper towels all around our son’s toilet so that he could see how much pee is splattering out. That proved my point.
Marie on Wed, 3rd Oct 2007 5:42 pm
Here’s what I do. In the first place, you can’t get men to wipe the pee, it’s just not going to happen. I keep a box of flushable wet wipes on the toilet tank and once a day a give the target area a quick wipe. I also have one of those toilet brush holders with a sort of cup the toilet brush sits in. I keep the reservoir full of a nice smelling cleanser, which keeps the air fresh, and also keeps the brush ready for a scrub anytime. Good luck!
Mommy, the Human Napkin on Wed, 3rd Oct 2007 6:23 pm
I have this same problem with two boys (plus a husband). My husband and seven-year-old son are very careful not to miss. I think they’ve been yelled at too many times. AHEM. However, my youngest is three and has serious aim issues (he likes to dance while he pees… I think he’s trying to kill me with the stress). But our biggest problem is that whoever built this house and decided to put CARPET in the bathroom was a complete moron. I have to use spray-on carpet cleaner at least once a week and do a full-on deep scrubbing once a month. I have to wipe down the walls, the outside of the trash can (if the room was bigger, we’d keep it elsewhere), and replace the whole seat every three months when I replace toothbrushes. I also keep a half-bleach solution in a squirt bottle (not a spray bottle) in the bathroom just for cleaning the little hard-to-reach area between the back of the seat and the underside of the tank (I cover the floor with a trash bag and several towels when I do this). I’m seriously considering covering the floor with plastic (if we could afford to tile the floor, we would, in a heartbeat), and I’m going to take the suggestion mentioned above to replace the wax ring under the potty, too.

Shannon did post a tip about this and I am in the midst of trying it out. She said to wash the walls, floors and toilet very thoroughly then spray Febreeze on the wall behind the toilet and the stuff around the toilet. It is supposed to help absorb the smell. I REALLY hope it works. I am so tired of the kids’ bathroom smelling bad and we clean it every day!

I’m with Suzanne. Urinals were made for standing, toilets are for sitting. I don’t have a urinal in my home, therefore the boys sit. My dad and four brothers did the same. I sweetly informed my husbamd when we married and he complied and just asked for an elongated seat. All that to say that you can still have to deal with that smell. The seal around the toilet is usually a big deal. Did anyone mention baking soda in a container like a candle bowl? It can help too.
Nic on Thu, 4th Oct 2007 9:54 am
I see that someone elses recommended it too: vinegar. I use it whenever my cats had an “accident”. So why wouldn’t it work on boy urine too? It’s a great environmentally friendly odor neutralizer.
And is there a place where you can hide a box of baking soda? If it takes up scents in the fridge, why wouldn’t it in the bathroom?

ODO BAN, ODO BAN, ODO BAN!!! I cannot stress strongly enough how good this stuff works. I was scrolling through your comments to see if anyone else suggested this and I see they have. Take the advice. It really works great. I buy mine at Sams. It comes in a large bottle and they also sell it in spray bottles. If you buy the large gallon jug, you can simply dilute it and put it in your own spray bottles. It can be used with water to MOP your floor, it can be used in a spray to spray on the toilet, tub, counter, etc. I LOVE the smell of it. It is fresh and clean and really does “ban the odor!!” I have a 13 year old, so I know what I’m talkin about
Try it and let me know if you don’t love it.

I have six boys (one potty training), besides my husband. Have been dealing with this problem for years. Dealing with it now and trying to sell our house! What works well for us is frequent use of Clorox wipes on all surfaces, changing out the seat (app every 6 mos - 1 yr) and wax ring every couple years. Industrial strength air freshener behind the toilet works, and we keep Febreeze on hand at all times. Also very helpful with my little guy is keeping a rubber mat cut out to fit well around the toilet, to catch any, um, splashing. I wish there were a good method of PREVENTION!!
Holly on Mon, 8th Oct 2007 3:55 pm
How ironic that I experienced the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Our half bath downstairs also smelled like a urinal, even after many, many times of cleaning it. I was at the point of pulling my hair out because I could not figure out where the smell was coming from. As I was emptying the trash can (which sits beside the toilet), my hand felt WETNESS underneath. Sure enough, someone apparently missed big time and it had pooled underneath the trash can and I had not thought to look there. After a good scrubbing, our smell is gone. I guess the tip is look everywhere, under everything to find the culprit. Good luck!
Becky on Fri, 12th Oct 2007 12:34 am
To add to the suggestion of using vinegar for cutting that urine smell, I have a book called Clean House, Clean Planet and she is ALL about using vinegar for cleaning and deodorizing. Her suggestion is to add a few drops of your favorite scent such as lemon or peppermint (any you choose) to the vinegar solution so that you leave the bathroom (or whatever surface you’re cleaning) smell nice rather than vinegary. I love it with those two flavors and she lists a gazillion more in her book that you can use.
I face the same problem with the pee smelling bathroom. My husband says he can’t smell it but he also has a deviated septum so his smeller don’t work too good! After reading all of these comments I feel so much better - not beating myself up quite so much for the lingering smell as it appears to be a universal problem. I’ll tackle it with renewed vigor tomorrow (especially cleaning the hinges and bolts). I may even go buy new toilet seats altogether. I have to say I’ve been looking at those seat scews lately and just dreading having to put my hands there and clean that ick - EEW!
I have also used this vinegar solution in a spray bottle on my son’s mattress. It just seems to hold onto that pee smell no matter how many times I’ve used “waterproof” mattress covers etc. I walk into the kids’ room and I just smell PEE!! Not good if I’m trying to sell my house! Not a favorable impression to leave in someone’s memory - - “oh, yes, I like the pee-house. Let’s buy that one please.”
And by the way, my culprits are a 4 yr old boy, 2 yr old girl (who knew girls could be this messy???) and an awesome hubby.

Oh my goodness! I can’t believe this is happening. I’m a clean freak (like many of you) and this is DISGUSTING. My Son is 3 and has been using the bathroom on his own for about 2 months. During the past few weeks I have noticed a lingering odor (urine) from the toilet area. I have used the Method brand (available at Target) bathroom cleaner & wipes, pine-sol, LOC Bathroom (Quixtar.com), and just now (after reading a suggestion on here) 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water. YES, the smell is now gone, but my nose is burning and my throat hurts (even with the window open and bathroom fan running). I just sent my husband to the store for clorax tabs, white vinegar, and lysol wipes. I will report back. My toilet is only 5 years old, but I promise you, I would replace the entire thing if I thought the smell wouldn’t return the next time my son pees. The thing I can’t understand is that HE never drips or splatters or anything. I am always in there with him and he even takes the bathroom spray and wipes the toilet rim every time he is done. Go figure. I can’t deal with this much longer. My husband thinks I’m 5150 and is starting to get upset with me.
